Boon Ong: Intimacies of Nude Photography

On this episode I speak with Boon Ong of Boon Ong Figuratif Photography, an intimate lifestyle photographer seeking to liberate himself and his subjects by highlighting the vulnerabilities and intimacies that reside at the core of taboo.

Boon came to Canada to pursue his parent’s dreams of becoming an engineer. Along his journey he fell in love with photographing nude art, and soon nude subjects. When he began publishing his work, he got a call from his mother in Malaysia, calling him a disgrace. It didn’t deter him, because there was something deeper he needed to expose—himself. Nude photography helped him come out and find his freedom. The exposition of the taboo enables the liberty to live a life often considered taboo. Boon says we all have closets, so maybe what he does is peek inside to bring some light to the darkness. He helps unravel the intimate lifestyles of humans in their sacred space. He doesn’t have an idealistic mission, but he does have a story.
